Meet Christovens: Dancing King & Special Education Student at LIFE Academy

Updated: Dec 5, 2022

Christovens is 11 years old and is a student in our special education class at LIFE Academy. He has been coming to school at LIFE Academy since 2015 and brings so much joy to our school and all who know and love him. Christovens also has Down Syndrome.

He is a dancing and singing machine! He always adds his own little twist and flare to any song we are singing- whether it be the national anthem, praise and worship song, or a silly song they are learning in class.

Christovens loves giving hugs and holding hands. His joyful outlook on life and loving presence is a gift from God.

He is also someone who has benefited from many different facets of myLIFEspeaks’ ministry and programming. Christovens has a rough family life and they have received a lot of support from our family empowerment department.

It has not been an easy or consistent road for Christovens and his family. His mom left the home in 2017 and has not returned and his father’s presence has been very inconsistent. Yet Christovens still comes to school with the most joyful heart every single day thanks to the help of his older siblings, cousins, and grandmother bringing him to and from.

Physical Therapy at LIFE Therapy Clinic has also been instrumental in his life. He was a late bloomer when it came to walking and if it had not been for therapy, Christovens would have missed out on some very key stages in his development. Because of myLIFEspeaks’ public health programming and family empowerment programming, Christovens has become a vibrant, excelling student at LIFE Academy.

At school, Christovens has gained invaluable knowledge about himself and his capabilities. Not only is he learning basic academic skills, but he is also learning skills that help him become more independent at home like getting dressed, going to the bathroom, and bathing by himself.

Christovens is also learning what it's like to live alongside and make life-long friends here at LIFE Academy. It’s evident that when Christovens is at school, he feels extremely safe and comfortable in his own skin. We look forward to Christovens coming to school every day and watching him continue to grow and flourish.
